    Why RAW Format?

    There are a lot of articles on the open internet regarding why RAW is better than JPEG and other formats of photography. I have tried to simplify the narrative for ease of my amateur and passionate photography enthusiasts.

     

    Why RAW format?

    Photographing in RAW format offers numerous benefits for photographers who seek ultimate control and flexibility in post-processing. Here are some of the key advantages:

    1. Highest Quality: RAW files contain uncompressed data straight from the camera sensor, preserving all the details, Colour information and nuances of the scene. This results in higher image quality compared to JPEG, which applies compression and may lose some information and provides with greater flexibility for post-processing.
    2. Greater Dynamic Range: RAW files retain a wider dynamic range compared to JPEGs, allowing for more latitude in adjusting exposure, highlights, and shadows during post-processing. This is particularly useful in high-contrast scenes where preserving details in both highlights and shadows is crucial.
    3. Non-Destructive Editing: such as Adobe Camera Raw or Lightroom allows photographers to make extensive adjustments to exposure, contrast, sharpness, and other parameters without degrading image quality. RAW editing allows for non-destructive adjustments, meaning you can tweak settings such as exposure, white balance, and contrast without permanently altering the image data.
