The barking deer as these are commonly known (due to their sound resembling that of a barking dog) are also known as Muntjacs and Mastreani deer. These are a small breed of deer are the oldest known deer, thought to have begun appearing 15–35 million years ago, with remains found in Miocene deposits in France, Germany and Poland.
We were going from Gairal to Dhikala, when I saw this Barking deer standing on the track passing through the dry river bed. As soon as our driver stopped the vehicle and I picked my Camera, it sprinted!

The present day species are native to South Asia.
These are one of the most shy and fearful creatures of the jungles, which run away on the slightest of alarm.
