Dudhwa is one of the handful of places where we find Rhino, besides the most famous Kaziranga National Park. They are second in size only to Asian Elephants. The grown up male can measure up to 12 to 12.5 feet in length withe shoulder height of 5.3 to 6.3 feet.
The Indian Rhinoceros ('Rhinoceros unicornins' also known as Greater one-horned Rhinoceros or Indian one-horned Rhinoceros) was the highlight of our Dudhwa Trip in June 2014.
Dudhwa is one of the handful of places where we find Rhino, besides the most famous Kaziranga National Park. They are second in size only to Asian Elephants. The grown up male can measure up to 12 to 12.5 feet in length withe shoulder height of 5.3 to 6.3 feet. Females are relatively slightly smaller in size. They usually weight up to 2100 to 2500 kg. but some of them in the past have been found to weigh up to 4000 kg.
They are basically grazers, thriving mainly on grass, but can also eat leaves, branches of shrubs, fruits and parts of submerged or floating aquatic plants as well.
In Dudhwa, we had to take a 20-25 minute elephant ride to reach to a place where we could watch these beauties. We are not allowed to alight the elephant so all the pictures are from the atop the elephant.
A good experience!
