Tigers use urine scent marking as a tool to mark their territory and females do it to announce their readiness for mating to any male tiger in vicinity. The territory marking is very predominant at the territorial boundaries than interiors of their area. Marking was most intensive when tigers were establishing territories, and animals on adjacent territories appeared to mark in response to each other.

Female tigers mark interiors of their boundaries when they are ready for mating. They marked intensively just prior to oestrus; this behaviour was reduced during oestrus. Males marked more frequently when females were in oestrus than during other stages of the females' cycle.
