In the afternoon of 23rd Dec, 2014, we decided to take a route through Sambhar Road, at Dhikala which is a narrow serpentine road on the river bank running for about 3 kms. I was accompanying Ajit Singh and Alok Kumar. As we proceeded on the road, near Dabaria we saw a couple of Gypsy vehicles stopped on the track, we stopped about 50-60 meters behinds them. On their right was a passage made by a small ravine just wide enough for the passage of animals. I saw some movement there and alerted the occupants of the two gypsy vehicles parked ahead of us. As they moved forward, within 10 seconds, a female elephant emerged from the passage and looked at our vehicle. I lifted my camera to click its picture as it was emerging from the ravine. As i saw from the view finder of my camera, it stopped for a moment and then rushed towards our vehicle, Ajit Singh exclaimed “oh! It’s charging on us!” and by that time our driver had already started driving the vehicle in reverse gear as he reacted immediately. The female elephant chased our vehicle for about 350 meters.
Clicked with Nikon D300s, Nikon AF-s Nikkor 70-200 mm f/2.8 at 70 mm, ISO 100, f/2.8, 1/80 seconds, Matrix metering, Exposure Compensation -1.33.
